This is a topic that has been discussed and discussed and well I too am going to add my say ….. As you can see from the tagging on previous posts, I use(ed) the Cactus radio triggers.

It all started when I was infected by the strobist disease. Although I have studio light, the issue of mobility was always a pain so I was more than happy to tryout camera flashes off camera. For experimental purposes I decided to get the Cactus V2 since I am a Canon shooter and at that time had the EX380 flash. I could not trigger it with my Multiblitz IR trigger I used for my Multiblitz studio light so the choice at that time was a no brainer. After purchasing the set, well to be honest I was quite happy with their performance. I later bought 2 more receivers.

The performance was not consistent and since I never used them for any major projects well I was OK with them….. until one weekend when I was away from home and a friend of mine, an expecting mother, asked to make a few portraits of her because ’she was running out of time’. That was when I found out I was a good actor. The triggers performed BADLY. Not only did they fail to trigger, but the lag was so great that when they did, there was no use. I kept clicking, she saw the flashes and kept posing and I kept acting. It was so embarrassing. I did get some good shots which she liked but I kept thinking of the lost ones.

After that day the decision was made… I must get new triggers. Since I like manual flash control, the elinchrome trigger was always the on the top of my list should I decide to substitute the Cactus V2s but then things changed. After the birth of my son I noticed that we were more and more around kids as such I started shooting more and more children. Manual flash control in such cases is quite difficult so I started thinking about taking the TTL route. My options were:
1. Canon ST-E2 ( we all know the limitations and I am not ready for any more)
2.The new fuss ‘Chinese’ triggers (as I said no more limitations)
3. Radiopoppers
4. Pocket wizard with iControl.

Pocket wizards are like the benchmark of radio triggers but the price and design always put me off. The design now is much better so after I got paid for a job I immediately ordered my set of pocket wizards.

To start off I will discuss the light setup for this image to the left. A lager image can be seen on my portfolio.
This image was made one sunday morning whilst my wife and I were having a walk/hike with our friends (Vlatko and Renata) through the forest on a mountain top known as Sljeme by Zagreb. The dark forest mixed with sunshine seamed like a nice background so I immediately gave out instructions to everyone whilst I removed two speedlites. One in front and to camera right (behind Vlatko), and the other behind and to camera left (in front of Vlatko). Both were set to half power and triggered by Cactus V2s.
